The ABAA QAP, An Architects Cheat Guide to Sustainable Durable Buildings

This presentation will discuss how Architects can help their projects achieve sustainable, durable, and identified performance goals by requiring the ABAA Air Barrier Quality Assurance Program (QAP).
We will illustrate the resources available to design professionals to achieve high-performance project goals by reviewing requirements for certified installers and contractors, how to specify and require ABAA evaluated materials, the ABAA site quality control audit process, and how to determine the associated cost and a return on investment.
Finally, we will review the process and challenges of value engineering high-quality installation standards and how to articulate the cost/benefit of implementing the ABAA QAP program compared to the increased risk of moisture damage and lowering of energy performance goals.

Brian Stroik is a recognized industry leader in the construction of energy efficient, sustainable and durable buildings.
Brian is involved with key industry organizations – For three years, he has served as Chair of the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA), he’s been voted for two years to the Board of Directors for the Building Enclosure Technology and Environmental Council (BETEC), has obtained certifications as a Certified Air Barrier Specialist (CABS) and Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) and is currently a Performance Excellence & Quality Consultant for American Contractors Insurance Group, a company that focuses on Quality in Construction for some of the largest construction companies in the United States.
Brian is a frequent speaker on the subjects of: commissioning the building enclosure (BECx), quality in construction, and mock ups / first run studies. Brian has also chaired numerous speaker sessions at national conferences and hosted roundtable discussions. He holds the following industry positions and affiliations:

Amy Baker is a Registered Architect with over 20 years of experience on commercial projects located across the country and internationally. She specializes in the technical development of projects with a passion for exterior enclosure detailing, building science, building codes, and construction specifications. Amy serves on the Board of Directors for ABAA and is a member of the Technical Committee. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Detroit chapter of CSI, the Building Enclosure Council of Greater Detroit (BEC-GD) and Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice (SCIP). She holds Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from Lawrence Technological University.
In 2018, Amy formed her own architecture and specification consulting firm, Amy Baker Architect. She is primarily focused on working with design and construction professionals, offering consulting services including architectural specification writing, code reviews, third-party document reviews, and construction administration services. Amy’s experience as an architect and technical specialist offers a unique perspective to specification consulting and enables her to function as an extension of the architectural team.
